Gavin O'Rourke
Gavin O'Rourke (Mickey Rourke) was the actual brains behind the IRA faction that became the
heartless kidnappers of this extraordinary race horse.  Money is always a coveted drawing card for
those who seek to fund their own "causes" in ways other than the most legitimate solutions.  The
Shergar caper was right up the heartless villains malevolent alley.

Mickey portrays the ruthless leader of the "kidnapping IRA members", disturbing, and short, which in
no way, reflects on Mickey's acting ability, but rather on the facts of the true progression of the
crime.  However he played O'Rourke to the hilt, with a true touch of a sinister and ruthless
character.

Written and directed by:  Denis C. Lewiston, (also director of "The Professionals", and "Hot Target").  Oh, and let's
not forget!
Laura Murphy, (of "The Big Bow-Wow"), and Tom Walsh, (of "Short"). Two relatively new actors were
also featured as. 1. Ian Holm's granddaughter Kate, and 2.  "The Orphaned boy", Kevin, who ultimately rescued
Shergar from the IRA terrorists.
Shegar was a uncommonly wonderful horse, beautiful, and a consumate winner.  He was in the news, for his wins,
especially the
Irish Derby in 1981, and even more so for his stud prowess.  It was while he was in his capacity as a
stud, that this story came to the attention of movie makers, he had covered over 55 mares in his first year at stud
service,  and 42 of them had "caught", as the terminology goes for impregnating mares.
"Shergar".  is a film few would say is a project which showcased Mickey Rourke's "abilities as an actor" in it's best
light, but overall it's touching and keeps one's attention.  The story was actually based on the saga of the first ever
actual "horse-napping" which took place in Ireland, and unfortunately, the outcome is stranger than fiction.
A young boy, son of a jockey who wished to follow in his deceased father's footsteps, fell in love with the horse, and
after taking the horse away, then altering Shergar's apprearance, the story takes on a definite change of course, and
becomes particularly nerve wracking, and dangerous, for both child and horse.
The picture injects historical value and depicts the life of this Champion of a horse!   Shergar should have become
known as one of the favorite Racehorse stories told on film of the century, but wasn't even much of a box-office
success.
There is also a heart-warming corroborating story, inside of the horse-napping story .  That of an orphan who is
working and lodging,  on the farm where the kidnapped horse came to be hidden, while negotiations were being
instituted, by the kidnappers toward the horses owners.
Shergar was insured by Lloyds of London during his competitive days, to the tune of 300,000.00 pounds sterling.
When he was later put "out to stud" by his owner, his coverage increased to
1,000,000.00 (one million)  pounds
sterling!
Sadly, this put Shergar in a position to become the target of criminals, namely the IRA gang of terrorist.
