Picture Claire is a thriller which premiered at the Toronto Film Festival in September 2001. Directed quite nicely by Bruce
McDonald to the screenplay of Semi Chellas , It’s an entertaining yarn starring Juliette Lewis as Claire Beaucage, a woman from
Quebec who gets in deep trouble with the vengeful heroin dealers she helped finger. They retaliate by burning her out of her
apartment. Frightened and in need of refuge, she heads to Toronto to stay with ex-lover and photographer Billy. Speaking only
French, she understands little English and speaks even less, she finds herself in the wrong place at the wrong time all too often. Claire
has difficulties finding Billy but continues her search for him as the cops continue to search for her. She finally finds his gallery along
with some photographs that he’d taken of her in her sleep, he knew she hated having her picture taken. The exhibition of his work is
opening and it seems to consist mostly of pictures of her..
Her more sophisticated double, Lily played by Gina Gershon unwittingly sets up the apparent babe in the woods for a dangerous
case of mistaken identity. Although we learn she is capable and savvy, Claire relies on her own resilience. When Billy’s new
girlfriend Cynthia, enters the picture, she’s terribly British and upscale; a complete contrast to her. When Lily shows up in a donut
shop to exchange diamonds she’s smuggled into the country for promised cash, she soon realizes the buyer is not paying. She kills
him and leaves. Unfortunately, Claire was in the restroom during the killing, but argued with the victim earlier and the owner fingers
her instead of Lily. Ultimately the crooks are after, Lily, the police and Lily are after Claire. Lewis is perfect as Claire. Gershon pulls
the Lily character off well and Callum Keith Rennie is good as the vicious thug.
BUT.. the casting of Mickey Rourke, as the slimy Eddie, although short-lived, fits him like a glove! The plot depends on a lot of
coincidences. In a restaurant Lewis gets into a small tiff with Eddie (Rourke) and heads to the ladie’s room. While she’s in there
tough girl Lily kills Eddie in an argument over diamonds. The storekeeper, never notices Gershon, but vividly recalled Lewis and
Rourke quarreling earlier and identifies Lewis as the only possible suspect. All plots begin somewhere, so the clever scene jump-
starts the film. The enjoyable and concise way Mickey Rourke growls his way through his small, but significant role. It's not a bad
little noir. Since Lewis’s character can't speak English, she is constantly in a fog about the criminal plot which is spinning around her.
People asks her questions in a language she can't understand. People shoot at her and she doesn't know why. Finding no theatrical
distributor, Picture Claire went straight to home media.
This character synopsis was written by K. Thompson feedback is greatly appreciated.
