Frank T. Wells
Mickey Rourke is back in the saddle, as Frank T. Wells, a talented cowboy on the rodeo circuit who is also a newly-released ex-
con, who’s done ten years prison time for a manslaughter conviction stemmed from an act of self-defense .In
F.T.W.. Also known
as The Last Ride, this is an “on-the-road” film set to take place in the modern-day badlands of the mid-west. Born in the saddle,
Wells is determined to turn his life around and soon returns to his old career of riding high and laying low, looking only for a few
good acres to claim. Not taking his new-found freedom for granted, Wells, like most cowboys, is hard-headed, soft-hearted, tough
and well on his way to escape his criminal past putting it all behind him. Although F.T.W. is one of Rourke’s lesser known movies,
he is effortlessly believable as the cowboy whose heart and soul belongs to the wild west of yesteryears gone by. However, when he
crosses paths with auto mechanic Scarlett his whole life changes he is instantly smitten when he sees she has his initials (F.T.W.)
tattooed on her arm. When Scarlet discovers Frank's initials are F.T.W., she believes it means that they were meant to be together.
the feeling is mutual and they quickly fall into a relationship their journey begins.
While Frank is oblivious to the fact Scarlett is actually the only surviving member of a notorious bank robbing gang at first. Scarlet
was both willing partner in crime and unwilling lover to her brother Clem (
Peter Berg), who has recently died after shooting four
people in a bank holdup.
Lori Singer is surprisingly convincing as Scarlett Stuart, a wild and beautiful woman on the run from the
bank robbery gone desperately wrong. The two make their way traveling from one rodeo competition to the next, living off Frank’s
winnings and Scarlett’s unpredictable robberies. By the time he discovers the truth, he decides to stand by his woman, even if it
means more trouble with the law. Together the outsiders buck the system, fight authority and chase after their pipe-dreams. Frank's
a reasonably honest man soft-spoken character is dealing with Scarlett who is hell is bent on self destruction. Lori Singer, displays a
wide range and was very, although the role was quite a stretch from any of her previous acting gigs.
Together the outlaw/lovers explore their own personal vision of the American dream as their boundless passion reels out-of-control.
But when the past comes back and threatens to catch up with them in the form of an old rodeo buddy-turned Montana sheriff
(played by the late
Brion James The Player, Silverado) in the role of sympathetic lawman. The stage is soon set for a shattering
climax that will change all of their lives forever. This is both a great and disturbing film about emotionally disturbed young woman
who, just can't shake her life of crime and sucks the man who loves her into a downward spiral right along with her. The Last Ride is
a very downbeat film, yet contains it’s fair share of great moments A man and a woman running from their pasts are trapped on a
self-created collision course with the future in this bazaar love story. However, director
Michael Karbelnikoff didn't utilize many of
the clever clichés in
Eddie Cook's and Mari Kornhauser's script. FTW is made strangely compelling by the dynamic performances
given by the lead and supporting cast, which include musicians
Aaron Neville and Charlie Sexton as well as Rodney A. Grant, Ron
Peterson and John Enos III..
