Aurelio D'Amato
In the winter of 1981-82 Mickey Rourke was in the Caribbean working on EUREKA with director Nic Roeg the third heavy,
Aurelio DíAmato. He was the young Catholic yes-man for Jewish gangster, played by
Joe Pesci who uses him to assess his
adversary. Rourke gladly accepted the offer from his friend Roeg, who had requested him for the part. The agreeable
location didnít hurt his decision either. His participation in this picture seemed like a good career move for Rourke at the
time.
The plot of EUREKA evolves around Jack McCann (Gene Hackman) who has found gold and now, years later owns this
breathtakingly sunny island hideaway. Jackís good fortune brings him no peace of mind as he copes with Helen, his bored,
alcoholic wife (Jane Lapotaire) and Tracy (Theresa Russell) his dear, but headstrong, daughter who has married a
dissolute, philandering social-climber played by Rutger Hauer.
Mayakofsky, (Pesci) is a greedy and power hungry Miami mobster who wants Jackís island in order to develop and build a
casino. Mickey Rourke appears a half-hour into EUREKA, bespectacled and all buttoned-down in full-on business gear. He
has a shy persona and has nervous awkward tendencies. Aurelio is constantly pushing his glasses up the bridge of his nose
and fidgeting. Simply put, he doesnít appear intimidating or ruthless enough to make any real type of threatening impact on
anyone. This alone makes Rourkeís character seem odd as the ring leader of the gang of conspirators later sent in to break
Jack down and cease the prize.
After a religious speech from Pesci, he sends his employee to the tropical; island paradise to size-up his bossís foe. When
Jackís daughter Tracy boasts her knowledge of mental math at the dinner table, Aurelio says to her, ìIím sure thatís not
your only talent, Miss McCann.î Although this was the best delivered line in the film, Mickey Rourke didn't quite "get the
girl".. this time.
Rourke on Nic Roeg
"When Iím in London, I see Nic. Yeah ..I like Nic Roeg a lot. Nic is uh .. umm pretty out there. Kind of like heís just .. You
just have a lot of fun on a Nic Roeg movie. ..and Nic..if he doesnít like your interpretation, heíll give you a line reading. You
know , heíll tell you exactly how to say it. Heís not shy that way. Some people objected to that, you know. ..and I thought
ëwooí (snickers) ëOKë. I mean I actually saw him giving people line readings: how to read their lines and they got all bent
out a shape. But I just chuckled and thought ìha ha haî you know. If you canít do it, listen to Nic. You know?"
This character synopsis was written by Kathy Thompson feedback is greatly appreciated.
