Tony
March 30, 1980

Mickey Rourke had his first taste as playing a disturbed vicious serial killer in this
psycho-on-the-loose story, about a burned-out,
self-doomed newspaper columnist and his circulation-hungry publisher who wants him to turn psychotic killer Tony Pate
(Rourke)
into Page One News.
David Janssen plays alcoholic Vince Perrino, a frustrated and cynical news writer who's harassed by his
ruthless boss, publisher
Harrison Crawford III (Robert Vaughn), into tracking the moves of Tony as his killing spree continues to
terrify the entire city. Tony, who picks and stalks young women habitually, has serious mental issues which are revealed as the story
progresses.
In this 1980 made for television movie, Pate is the ruthless villian whose victims continue to pile up. The character was inspired and
loosely based on the
Son of Sam murders. It closely follows the killer's moves whose victims are young, vibrant woman in Los
Angeles. It also provides the insight of how far ruthless journalists will go and the extreme lengths they take to sell papers in a time of
a national crisis like Son of Sam.  With veteran actors such as
Robert Vaughn, Susan Sullivan, Robert Foxworth and a very
young
Mickey Rourke, all the performances were theatre quality, but it was David Jannsen who would be delivering both his best
and last. Just a short time after the filming of
"City in Fear" was completed he died. It would become his final curtain call. When
watching the movie today, 25 years later you can nearly feel the curtain fall.
