Martin
A Prayer For The Dying was a novel written by the author Jack Higgins . He had written such novels as "The Eagle Has Landed",
"A Season in Hell" and "On Dangerous Ground" which made him a best selling author. Soon he was selling his books by the
millions. In 1973 Higgins wrote "A Prayer For The Dying." In 1987
Edmund Ward and Martin Lynch turned the original book into a
screenplay. The rest is history. This movie included such names as
Mickey Rourke (Martin Fallon), Liam Neeson(Liam Docherty)
and
Bob Hoskins (Father Michael Da Costa). This undertaking was to be done by Director Mike Hodges. The original director of
the movie left halfway through production due to disputes with the producers. Even
Mickey Rourke had attempted to disassociate
himself from the film.
Rourke plays a man struggling to escape his past and any association he has with the IRA . He finds out that his past still follows him
no matter where he goes. Mickey Rourke's character wants to get away to America, but lacks a passport and other documents to
be able to get aboard a ship and ends up having to pull off one more job for
Jack Meehan (Alan Bates) a crime boss that has a
front in a funeral home. He wants to knock off his rival crime boss so that he is the only one running things.
Fallon reluctantly agrees
and is seen killing the man by a priest. To cover himself, he goes to the church and waits for the priest to go into the confessional.
Once in the confessional
Fallon confesses his sins to Father Da Costa for the murder and then is protected by the church. Once
realizing who he is, the priest knows that he can't tell the police anything that he has seen or else he risks breaking his holy vows.
It's been rumored that Mike Hodges wanted his name taken off the credits after the filming was complete. This film was filled
controversy, but still managed to be released but was not well accepted by many critics.
Mickey Rourke was criticized harshly for
the role by many of these critics, mainly because they felt that he was a poor choice for the role of
Martin Fallon. Some even stated
that the roles should have been reversed and Liam Neeson should've played the part of
Fallon. Mickey Rourke also waived his fee
for doing the movie and felt that the picture was butchered by distributors. This is a movie that fans would appreciate.
Mickey
Rourke
is the hero. Once you truly grasp and understand "A Prayer For The Dying" and how and why the characters become
who they are, you see and appreciate the film in a whole new light.
